It’s easy to snack in between meals, at your desk in the office, in the car between meetings or on the go. Problem is, that can lead to unhealthy habits forming and weight gain. Do you want to know the good news?
It’s easy to snack in a healthier way, there are some common myths to avoid – like breakfast or diet bars being a healthier option (they can actually have more of the bad stuff in them than good) but on the whole, it is possible to snack healthily without too many adverse effects. You just have to know and understand what you are putting in your body.
Sometimes, grabbing a healthy snack can actually help you achieve any weight loss goals you have, or help you to maintain whatever level you are currently at. This is because it can help keep the cravings away in between meals ensuring you continue to eat healthily instead of grabbing some fast food. Preparation is everything, so let’s take a look at some healthier options.
Nuts
Nuts are one of the best snacks ever (in moderation). They take care of your heart and prevent many cancers. Moreover, the shape of a nut shows you which organ of your body it takes care of. Kidney nuts – kidneys, walnuts – brain. Ok, you probably read somewhere that nuts have lots of calories. Yes, it’s true because of the fat but this is a healthy type of fat and you will feel full after eating nuts so it means you do not need to eat more and you have enough calories.
Greek yoghurt
Greek yoghurt with fruit and granola. Skyr is an Icelandic yoghurt with a lot of proteins as well as the Greek version. Both of them can give you a lot of proteins and they taste great too. Berries are full of many different vitamins and granola gives you healthy carbs that will keep you feeling full for almost 5 hours. It’s not said that you have to use berries, you can add different fruits like bananas or something to suit your palette.
Dark chocolate
Dark chocolate is full of flavanols that may lower blood pressure and reduce heart disease risk, they also make your skin look beautiful. Dark chocolate has about 70 percent of cocoa and we know that cocoa is the best thing that keeps our body looking (and feeling) young!
Hummus
This is a long topic. Hummus can help women with health issues like menopause because it takes care of their hormones. However, this is very important, hummus can be eaten with whatever you want. You can make a seeded toast with hummus, you can eat different vegetables with hummus. Another advantage of hummus is that it reduces inflammation, even if it’s chronic. Chickpeas, olive oil, red pepper, lemon…only good natural ingredients. Hummus is good for people who suffer from imbalance of sugar. Food that has very high Glycaemic Index are digested very quickly that is why you feel happy after eating high carb fast food but soon you will feel bad and hungry once again. It is caused by sugar. Hummus is slowly digested so you feel full for a long time after because it has low GI.
Caprese salad
This is one of the most common Italian salads ever and it is healthy as well. Creamy and full of proteins, mozzarella with tomatoes full of potassium is the best combination on earth. Italians are known as the nation that knows what the best food is. Tomatoes are rich in vitamin C, potassium, and lycopene, an antioxidant that reduces the risk of cancer. Mozzarella is high in protein, calcium and vitamin B12.
Eggs
We have written about how eggs are good for you in the past. Eggs are one of the healthiest foods on earth….trust us. Egg is a sign of life and has everything inside it to sustain life. They are full of protein, as well as vitamins K2 and B12. After eating eggs you feel full and they reduce the calories you eat for many hours after.
Whey protein shake
It gives you loads of protein and the flavours are amazing. The thing that you have to concern yourself with is that
it’s good to invest some money in a good quality product, not a cheap alternative. The better the quality, the less sugar inside. A lot of companies shows whey protein powders that have less proteins and more sugar. Be careful, read labels.
Mackerel
Mackerel is usually prepared and smoked so you can eat it now. This is one of the best fish – full of good fats and loads of proteins. You just need a fork!
Slices of cooked meat
This is a good thing for us folks. You can buy it in most shops. Meat is already cooked or baked – Go for something like turkey. You can eat it straight away and it is full of proteins, lower levels of carbs. This is what we need when we snack healthy.
Popcorn with spicy pepper
Popcorn does not contain a lot of calories and one thing to consider is that the spiciness can actually wake up your metabolism. It has a lot of fibre and antioxidants. The thing is – you can add whatever you want to make the popcorn special. Himalayan salt, black pepper, red pepper powder, turmeric etc.
Simple baked potatoes
A lot of us think that potatoes can make you gain weight. Nope. Different oils and sauces make potatoes more calorific. When you bake them on tin foil – they do not contain more calories, they just give you the nutrients and vitamins, fibre and health.
